DEAF SENIOR HOUSING FACILITY IN MICHIGAN

At the encouragement of Deaf Senior Citizens in southeast Michigan,
a Coalition has been developed to explore the need for Deaf Senior Housing.
The founders of the Coalition are: Area Agency on Aging 1-B (AAA1-B),
Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services, Inc. (DHIS), and Presbyterian Villages
of Michigan (PVM).
A survey was sent to Deaf senior citizens throughout the State of Michigan and
a report was generated. The report indicated that there is an impressive need
for senior housing and supportive services designed exclusively for culturally
Deaf older adults.
We are in the developmental stages in establishing the FIRST DEAF HOUSING
FACILITY in the State of Michigan. (Presently, there are 16 such facilities in the
Nation. The closest Deaf Senior Housing Facility is in Columbus Ohio.)
Property has been identified in Orion Township located in Oakland County. There are ongoing discussions with Michigan State Housing Authority (MSHDA). The Coalition continues to meet on a monthly basis and has expanded its participants through opportunity to serve on 3 subcommittees: Site & Building Finance; Fund Raising;
Public Relations.
A Waiting List Application is available. Completed applications will assure
the applicant that he/she will receive updated information periodically.
An ‘official application’ will be mailed when the Deaf Senior Housing is
